FLOMUN I
Our Beginning
Our organization was founded by three high school students in South Florida who wanted to create an engaging Model UN experience for delegates across the state during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. All MUN conferences at the time had either pivoted to virtual or been cancelled, and adapting to this ‘new normal’ was challenging. MUN wasn’t the same as it used to be; quality varied from conference to conference as teams struggled to mimic the physical MUN experience through Zoom meetings and Discord calls. When we founded FLOMUN, we knew that our conference was only going to be as good as our staff, so we invited native Floridian students from the collegiate MUN circuit to chair committees. Our staffers hailed from top MUN teams in the country, including Georgetown University, Florida International University, and Harvard University. In December of 2020, FLOMUN became the largest independent MUN conference based in the state of Florida after only its first iteration, with over 100 delegates attending through Zoom. The positive feedback we received after FLOMUN I was overwhelming, and it was in our reflection that we came to a realization. While we achieved our goal of bringing delegates together during difficult times, there was still a massive lack of diversity within the MUN circuit on a nationwide scale.
